Symonds Yat
We last visited Yat rock some 20 years ago, and struggled
to the top over a bumpy terrain more suitable to a
landy than wheelchairs, but how things have changed.
Although the coach driver had fun finding it, as you can see from the first picture below, we were so glad he continued, as the stopping place he found was perfect, just by a well appointed picnic spot and café, loo’s were a little way off, but at least they were there, and now the bumpy path had been replaced by a
new tarmac path and a wooden road bridge that continued on the other side to take you right to the top of Yat rock.
There were a number of objections from the English
Heritage who wanted to preserve it as it was, but the National trust along with the RSPB persevered and obtained the necessary planning permission and built the bridge so that we could all enjoy the spectacular views from the 504ft vantage point. The RSPB were there promoting their organisation, and had placed binoculars and telescopes for the use of the public to take a
peek at the peregrine falcons nesting in the rocks opposite.
Followed by ice creams, of course.
