It was our
wonderful polio fellowship group Christmas social on the 9th
December and Mike and I were picked up by our local dial a
ride which is sooooo much easier and less painful than
trying to get my leg in the car, the left one doesn’t mind
one bit but the right leg … whimpers and moans every time I
move it.
So I get into my wheelchair and don’t get out until I need
the ladies or back home.
Our community centre hall was decorated very tastefully and
our tables were so colourful with crackers and festive
serviettes etc.
Bob our lovely chairman started the festivities by
announcing the grand draw.
Loads of great prizes and I and Mike were delighted when we
both won a prize.. he actually won a bottle that we had put
in the draw so he gave that part of the prize away.
I was lucky enough to win a bottle of Baileys .. I do like a
tipple at Christmas.
Afterwards we enjoyed a scrumptious tea and pulled crackers
and generally had a good catch up with our chums.
However I then needed the facilities ( loo to everyone else)
but I’m being very polite!
It was then that we were told the disabled toilet was out of
order! How on earth will I manage in the normal ladies?
… Actually I didn’t.. I had to have a lot of help from
various friends and son to get me into the cubicle… then
shock as the toilet was so low I felt I was falling in! Then
of course I had to get back in wheelchair and wash my hands
.. but that was only possible by someone pushing me to the
basin and then that annoying hand dryer.
However we muddled through and ventured back into the hall
where the more agile people of our group, ( yes there are
some ) gave out cards from our friends AND a beautifully
wrapped Christmas present.
I always feel sad when we all leave to go our separate ways
but we will see them all ( God willing ) at our social in
January.
As our driver Dave was outside waiting for us, mike trundled
me out to the car park and I was soon being strapped in (
don’t want to fall out the back ! ) and driven back to our
welcoming warm home and our lovely cat Persia waiting for
us. Carole Gatford
