Well its BBQ
time again, and although we’re not quite
sure, this could be BBQ number fifty or
thereabouts, the very first polio BBQ taken
on by Barbara and Bob was after a chap
called Mr Linfield, who some of you may
remember, had to cancel the BBQ he was due
to hold at his house for the local polio
group so Barbara stepped in and offered to
host the BBQ at their house in Lancing and
the rest is history, a BBQ every year from
then on without fail, we held sixteen annual
polio BBQ’s at their previous house in High
Salvington, a lovely house, but perched on a
steep hill, which made it particularly
challenging to get everyone safely into the
garden, but we did it but it was hard work,
electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters
were quite rare back then so most were man
handled down the steep slopes. Their
present house in Findon Valley is much
easier being on level ground.
Anyway there were about sixty people in
attendance this year, and as usual all were
served by very willing volunteers, friends
and family, with a lovely BBQ meal which
included all the favourites and a super
pudding followed by water melon then teas
and coffees, super, and it’s a many thanks
to the band of merry helpers that kept up
the pace despite the heat and humidity of a
hot July afternoon.
As always the raffle was very well
supported, and raised £140, the tombola
raise another £58, which was very good
indeed.
I had quite a number of pictures to choose
from, they were taken by Karen S and Janet
with a few from Clare and Kaylin, many
thanks, the group photo at the bottom of
this page, was taken by Karen Z and yes I
know she appears in the picture, but the
picture of her was taken from a photo that
Janet took earlier and I photo shopped her
in the group scene, hope you like it, if you
would like a high res copy just ask and I’ll
email it to you.
Cheers and beers all, Robin
